YOUNG entrepreneurs have run a lemonade stand in Bridgwater’s Asda store to raise money for a special care baby unit.
The Haygrove School students, who sold their own recipes of lemonade and hot honey and lemon, made £140 for the Cots for Tots charity.
The event aims to educate young people in the principals of enterprise and help build confidence, in addition to business, marketing and finance skills.
Haygrove School teacher and Cots for Tots fundraiser Tim Handel said: “My wife and I lost our son, Archie, on October 10, 2012 – he was one week old – so Cots for Tots is very close to our hearts.”
The Cots for Tots Appeal is the charity for the South West region’s Special Care Baby Unit at St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol.
Tim added: “The Citrus Saturday lemonade selling was a huge success and has benefited our students hugely in giving them the confidence to make their own products and sell to the public.”
Citrus Saturday, part of the Open Innovation Project which includes Somerset County Council, was a ‘taster’ for the main events in July 2013.
Haygrove head of careers Mandy Pleece, who organised the event, said: “It was an excellent opportunity for the students. Asda have been amazing and the students have worked so hard for a very positive day.”
Student Scott Nucton said: “We raised a lot of money for Cots for Tots thanks to people who donated money and worked really hard.”
Bridgwater College Academy students previously became the first in Somerset to pioneer the enterprise project by setting up a stand at a Homes in Sedgemoor event held at the Academy.
Citrus Saturday is supported by Futures for Somerset, the Bridgwater Education Trust and Somerset County Council.
