A Bridgwater primary school are now proud members of the NHS's Big Brush Club.

Spaxton Primary C of E School, part of the Quantock Education Trust, has joined the campaign to spread the message about children's oral hygiene.

The importance of this issue is underscored by the fact that tooth decay was the most common reason for young children's hospital admission last year.

Ms Lesley Ball, reception and Key Stage 1 teacher and oral hygiene ambassador at Spaxton, said: "I am so passionate about this project because it really is suitable for all children and is a great way to reinforce the messages from home about the importance of clean teeth.

"The children have shown so much enthusiasm and independence – they are proud of their shiny teeth each day".

Bridgwater Mercury:

As part of the initiative, students brush their teeth during small group time.

Headteacher Ms Rachel Rood added: "When we discussed that one of the reasons we do this in school is because not all children have the same opportunity to clean their teeth at home, our children decided that they wanted to help support children in those situations by donating brand-new toothbrushes.

"We have started our collection point in school and will be making regular drops to the local food bank.

"I am proud of our children for the character and values they have demonstrated.”
