A PRE-SCHOOL near Bridgwater has been rated 'good' following a visit from Ofsted inspectors.

Cheeky Chimps, located in Ridgeway, Ashcott, was given the rating following the recent inspection on February 20.

The school, operating out of purpose-built premises on the grounds of Ashcott Primary School, provides education for children ages 2-11 and is attended by 38 pupils.

It operates from 8.45am to 2.45pm, during term time, with additional provisions for a breakfast and after-school club.

Ofsted inspectors found: "Children arrive happily and settle quickly at this very welcoming and friendly preschool.

"Staff are extremely warm and engaging with the children and get to know them well."

The report further noted: "Children are confident and independent, showing high levels of self-esteem.

"There is a challenging and ambitious curriculum that successfully excites children and supports them to make the best possible progress in their learning and development."

The school was praised for its particular focus on children's communication and language preparation, which prepares the learners "well for their future learning, including moving on to school."

The inspection further identified high standards of behaviour, with the children understanding the rules and showing respect and kindness to all.

It reads: "Children understand the rules and behave well.

"They play well with one another, take turns and share".

The inspection observed staff as excellent role models, adding "Staff work well with parents to ensure that children's individual needs are understood and met."

Inspectors also found that: "Children are very engaged and interested in the learning experiences on offer."

Ranging from physical activities outside, to developing a love of books and stories, the curriculum was found to be varied and stimulating.

However, the report did highlight a potential area for improvement: "During some group story times there are many distractions, such as staff setting up for lunch or children using the bathroom.

"This means that children do not benefit fully from all learning opportunities."

But the Ofsted report says the school's special educational needs coordinator was effectively closing any gaps in the children's learning.

It reads: "Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities make good progress from their starting points".

Overall, the inspectors found "an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts children's interests first."

Cheeky Chimps remains committed to sustaining the 'Good' rating and looks forward to continuing the path of progress.
