Toolstation Western League: Brixham AFC 0-1 Bridgwater United

BRIDGWATER United returned to winning ways at the weekend as they defeated Brixham away from home.

The match in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division ended 0-1 to Bridgwater as they were able to keep Brixham out to seal the win.

The win is the Robins first in the last four outings after suffering defeat in the league, FA Vase, Somerset Cup and the Les Phillips Cup.

And the three points sees Bridgwater into fourth spot in the Western League, now seven points behind league leaders Helston Athletic.

Despite making a new signing in the week, Bridgwater United didn't include Sam Hedges in the starting line-up.

The match was a feisty affair as eight yellow cards were dished out in the 90 minutes, four for each team.

The first came early in the match and set the tone as Brixham's number 6 was cautioned after a poor challenge on Morgan Williams.

Just minutes later and Josh Phillips went into the book for Bridgwater with an equally poor challenge.

The first big chance came 15 minutes in when from a corner, Brixham forced a wonder save out of Luke Purnell in the Bridgwater goal.

The visitors began to gain control of proceedings and were creating chances of their own.

Jake Lewellyn forced a save and his brother Tom hit a free kick goal bound shortly after but it too was saved.

Then, on 40 minutes, Bridgwater took the lead through a brilliant Morgan Williams strike that caught the keeper off guard.

Into the second period and Bridgwater looked to control the match and see out the win to earn three points.

That is what they were able to do, albeit while picking up a few more yellow cards, as Brixham did too in fairness.

The chances were few and far between in the second period and some sturdy defending from the Robins earned them the victory they were chasing.

Bridgwater still have eleven league games still to play and they will be hoping to win all of them if they are a chance of automatic promotion from the division.

They are next in action on Saturday, March 3 away from home as they take on Welton Rovers for a 3pm kick off at the West Clewes Recreation Ground.
