A SOMERSET band said they are heading into 2021 with ‘high hopes for the future’ despite the ‘stormy waters’ of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In the last ten months scores of businesses across Somerset have struggled under coronavirus restrictions and it has been a difficult time for the music and the arts industry which relies heavily upon the ability to perform to live audiences.

But Scottie and Chelle from Rileys Cove said the lockdown rules and fewer commitments have provided them with an ideal opportunity to focus on writing new music.

The duo are set to release their debut EP, High, this week

“There is absolutely no doubt that the last 12 months have been tough for many,” Scottie said who lives in Wedmore.

“Families have lost loved ones, businesses have struggled, the NHS and key workers have been under tremendous pressure, and we’re still seeing the effects of the virus now and all have to continue do our bit – but as a band, we’ve been able to use some of the emotions and experiences we’ve had in recent times, and convert them in to lyrics and music.”

The pair came together to form Rileys Cove 13 months ago after meeting in the six-piece band ,Kindred, which has had success over the last few years playing festivals.

The vocals for the band are provided by Chelle, who works in communications and marketing, with Scottie on guitar.

The duo said they play ‘a soulful collection of acoustic songs sung and played from the heart.’

“For me, the song ‘High’ is a particularly relevant track right now,” Chelle said.

“It’s about resilience, taking one day at a time, and keeping your ‘head high’ during difficult times. ‘I’d like to think it’s relatable for many.”

The duo’s EP was recorded in the heart of Somerset at BeeHive Studios when restrictions eased during the summer.

“This is our debut EP, so naturally we’re really excited to be releasing it out to the public, but sadly I think it’s going to be quite some time before we can share it with a live audience,” Scottie said.

“In the meantime, we hope everyone can enjoy listening in their homes through this lockdown.

“I know Riley’s Cove and all the other local bands will be doing all they can to support our local pubs and music venues when we’re all in a position to get back to doing what we love.

“Let’s just hope better times are coming.”

Their EP is titled ‘High’ and contains brand new tracks; High, Without and Stormy Waters, as well as a cover of Paulo Nutini’s ‘Loving You’ and an acoustic version of Kindreds’ ‘Sunset Surf.’
