THE M5 northbound is closed after a collision involving a lorry resulted in a large oil spillage.
The motorway from junction 24 near Bridgwater will remain closed while Highways England deal with the damage to the barrier and the 3000 litres of diesel spilled.
Lane 1 and 2 were initially closed past the scene and lane three was kept open for traffic, however the northbound carriageway is not being fully closed from junction 24.
Traffic is being diverted along the A358 to rejoin at junction 23.
The collision just before 3pm this afternoon (February 2), within the M5 northbound roadworks section between junctions 24 and 23.
Avon and Somerset Police and Highways England Traffic Officers are on the scene.
"The lorry has ruptured it's fuel tank which has resulted in a large spillage and nearside barrier damage has also been reported," said a spokesperson for Highways England.
UPDATE: Please be aware that the full closure currently in place for this incident is likely to remain in place overnight due to the extensive damage caused to the barrier and the clear up needed on the road surface to make it safe pic.twitter.com/DTR1qOEnsl

"The fire service are on scene, working to contain the diesel spillage and once vehicle recovery has taken place a full assessment of the damage to the carriageway will be carried out.
"The northbound carriageway will remain closed for barrier repairs and potential resurfacing work and the road will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.
"Road users are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion route and exit the M5 northbound at J24.
"Delays are likely on approach to the closure, with additional journey times also expected on the diversion route."
