WORK has started on the construction of 26 homes in Sedgemoor.

Persimmon Homes is building 26 homes at the Priory Green development on Hayne Walk in Chilton Polden.

The plans were granted permission in October 2019, despite concerns from local residents and the parish council.

Chilton Polden Parish Council said it was concerned about the safety of junction at Chapel Close due to limited visibility, as well as being worried about the pressure the development would have on the existing drainage system.

They also noted that Chilton Polden does not have a school and that the local doctors are already busy, meanwhile Edington Parish Council opposes the plan on grounds of overdevelopment.

Over the course of two consultation events, 52 objections were submitted by local residents.

However, Sedgemoor District Council agreed to approve the planning application.

Now, work has started on the 26 homes.

Half of the properties will be ‘affordable’ , and the first homes are expected to be released for sale later this month.

“It’s fantastic to see construction work begin at Priory Green,” said Carly, sales director at Persimmon Homes Severn Valley.

“We have seen huge interest in this development and we’re certain that the homes are going to sell extremely quickly.

“Priory Green is an unusually small development for us in an enviable village location. Househunters will have to act very quickly to secure their preferred plot.”

Less than seven miles north east of Bridgwater, Priory Green will be made up of two, three and four-bedroom homes.

The site is 0.75 hectares in size and the work also includes public open space, new access and drainage infrastructure.

A total of £185,460 will be raised for the local authority through the Community Infrastructure Levy.
