Demolition of old Haygrove School building in Bridgwater begins

Home to Haygrove School since 1973 and Dr Morgan's Grammar School from the 1930s, the building is is being torn down.

This is to make way for a landscaped area that will become the main walkway to the new Haygrove School building, the staff car park and home to new tennis and netball courts.

Headteacher of the school, Mr Reid, said they are "very sad" to see the old building disappear.

"It has been a part of the fabric and history of Bridgwater since 1937 when Dr Morgan’s Grammar School for Boys moved to Durleigh Road from premises on Mount Street," he said.

"Our history is important to the school community and to the wider local area and we are working on ways to commemorate this heritage within our new premises, including plans for preserving the clock face that has sat proudly at the top of the red brick tower for decades and re-purposing some of the famous red bricks.

"A visual timeline that tells the story of Dr Morgan’s contribution to education in the town is also in the pipeline.

"I am so looking forward to having the opportunity to welcome current, past and future members of our school family into our new premises as soon as we are able.”

Plans to replace the main school building were approved by Sedgemoor District Council in June 2019.

The proposals include the demolition and replacement of the main school building to provide new and improved school buildings on the site.
