A PLAY area in Bridgwater was damaged on Saturday morning (May 22).

Sedgemoor District Council (SDC) are appealing for information after a fire was started on the safety surfacing in Edinburgh Road Play Area.

Newspaper was laid on the floor with a barbecue on top and was set alight.

The incident happened around 7am, and was discovered by staff who had gone to empty the bins.

"We are hoping that this was an unthinking mistake rather than deliberate vandalism," said a spokesperson for SDC.

"We don’t yet have the repair costs, but if anyone has any information or footage, a crime reference number has been given by the police, so please let them know by calling 101 with reference 5221113850. "
