THE number of cases of the Delta variant of Covid-19 in the south west rose by 74% in the last week, new figures show.
Public Health England (PHE) says that the variant currently accounts for around 99% of cases that are sequenced across the UK.
Across the UK, the number of confirmed cases rose by 54,268 since last week, to a total of 216,249 - a 32% increase.
The total number of cases in Somerset districts, up to July 7, with the rise in number in brackets, was:
Bath and North East Somerset: 344 (+124)
Mendip: 65 (+33)
North Somerset: 351 (+166)
Sedgemoor: 109 (+45)
Somerset West and Taunton: 101 (+49)
South Somerset: 79 (+31)
Total: 1,049 (+448)
