SCHOOLS in Bridgwater enjoyed all the fun of the carnival this month, thanks to National Children’s Carnival Week.
Organisers of Bridgwater Carnival provided schools in the area with information packs and ideas to help children create their own carnival costume.
At Somerset Bridge Primary School, the whole school took part in the celebrations.
They designed and created their own carnival masks, headdresses, collars and squibs.
The children then wore their creations and paraded around the school grounds, dancing and performing to carnival music.
A spokesperson for Bridgwater Carnival said: “This was truly a very poignant moment for all concerned as, for the first time in 18 months, the whole school was able to join together in one activity, Covid-19 having disrupted normal school activities such as assemblies, sports says and school trips during this period.
“A real cause for celebration therefore and there is no better way to celebrate than through carnival.”
Pupils at both Northgate Primary School and Brent Knoll Primary School also took part in the carnival fun, as part of National Carnival Week.
Katie Penny, headteacher Northgate Primary School, said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in Carnival Week.
“They had great fun singing, making costumes and learning new dances.”
Bridgwater Carnival has been offering carnival related activities to schools in the area for almost 10 years. These usually take place during the autumn term in the lead up to the traditional annual carnival.
The 2021 carnival has been postponed this year due to Covid-19 and is set to take place in 2022.
