SOMERSET SKILLS & LEARNING
“IT’S about supporting people as they start their journey into the workplace.” Those are the words of Kate Priddle, who oversees the traineeships and apprenticeships at Somerset Skills & Learning (SS&L), which helps people in Somerset find their way on that journey.
“We make sure young people are getting the right advice to help them plan their career path. We have many different starting points for each learner wanting to make a positive change and take steps to work or further learning,” she adds.
The advice and the programmes available include those relating to traineeships and apprenticeships. In shaping a path towards their dream career, young people can start with a traineeship, which ensures they gain the right skills and qualifications to progress to the next stage.
SS&L can help learners achieve any maths and English qualifications they need, certificates in relevant skills, experience in the field and the confidence to pursue their career goals.
Traineeships last from six weeks to six months and are tailor-made to help each young person achieve their goals in work sectors such as care, admin, childcare, digital skills, retail and more – plus SS&L can design a traineeship for an alternative area of work chosen by a learner.
“We love to be challenged,” says Kate. “As long as we can find an employer to support your traineeship, you can do it in your sector of choice!”
After completing a successful traineeship, young people may progress to an apprenticeship or directly into work, depending on the chosen path. The advice SS&L gives covers opportunities to reengage in learning, pre apprenticeships and apprenticeship programmes. SS&L has been delivering programmes to help young people since they were in their infancy, at locations across Somerset, bringing a wealth of experience and a history of success.
“Young people are often unsure of what they want to do,” Kate explains.
“We understand what drives them, what they’re good at and we understand how to help them on their journey.”
One thing’s for sure, SS&L traineeships lead to success. Many trainees go on to become apprentices, others are now in full time work and enjoying the benefits of working life, while some have gone on to further study.
Among SS&L’s success stories is Ashton, above, who has picked up numerous awards since starting her traineeship. After her traineeship, during which she achieved her maths and English qualifications, she completed a Level 3 apprenticeship in childcare and is now working full time at a nursery in Taunton - her dream career!
Ashton has also been chosen to be SS&L’s traineeship ambassador.
Whatever your goals, SS&L can help you start your journey.
