EARLY this morning an accident on the M5 northbound between junction 24 and junction 23 caused an oil spill, resulting in lanes 1 and 2 to be closed.
As of 11:30am there was approximately four miles of congestion on the motorway stretch near Bridgwater.
National Highways South West said that they are doing all they can to clear the spill.
"Treatment is ongoing to try and make the carriageway safe for reopening."
"This is causing delays of at least 75 minutes, please allow additional time for your journey this morning."
Police were on scene to direct traffic through the one remaining open lane.
As of 11:53AM the northbound lanes between Huntworth and Bridgwater has reopened.
There are 45 minute residual delays on approach to J24 with 8 miles of slow moving congestion.
