A NEW weekend market is set to launch in Bridgwater next year.
The market, organised by Michelle Beck of By Invitation Events, is set to start in spring 2022.
This 'destination' market is set to follow in the footsteps of the hugely popular Taunton Independent Market, but Michelle is determined to give the Bridgwater event its own identity.
She would like to encourage Sedgemoor businesses and independent traders to become part of the monthly event.
Michelle is currently conducting a feasibility study, along with some market research supported by the Bridgwater Mercury to find out what residents would like to see from this new market.
“As a proud Somerset girl, I am hugely excited by this project and already have tremendous support from many local traders," she said.
"With our high streets facing difficult times nationally, my aim is to see Bridgwater have a regular weekend market and to help get Bridgwater firmly on the map as a quality shopping and social destination.
"I am hoping the market will have around 60 stalls. I will bring with me the award-winning stalls we have in Taunton but I also want to attract Sedgemoor businesses.
"I am really excited for Bridgwater, with Hinkley and higher house prices, it really is an up and coming town."
The market is set to be held in the town centre, and run along Fore Street, the high street and eventually to Quayside and around King George Square.
There are already major events in Bridgwater, such as the Bridgwater Food and Drink Festival, Bridgwater Quayside Festival and Bridgwater Castle Market.
David Mears, town clerk for Bridgwater Town Council, added: “Bridgwater is a historic market town with many independent shops and various events throughout the year.
"I am thrilled to see another event come to Bridgwater, which will create more awareness of Bridgwater’s cultural and historic charms and boost footfall for town centre businesses.”
Cllr Mick Lerry, chair of the town team and portfolio holder for town centre economy, said this is a 'great initiative' to help the 'repair and recovery' of Bridgwater businesses after the pandemic.
"The market will provide residents and wider community with another reason to visit the town centre," he said.
"The feasibility study will gather information from local people to identify their needs.
"I hope that Bridgwater people will respond to the survey to help shape what the weekend market can offer.
"The weekend market is about creating a retail offer that local businesses and hospitality service can be part of.
"This type of market has worked well in other towns in Somerset and the Bridgwater Town Council is really glad that the Independent Market has chosen to invest in Bridgwater."
