MEMBERS of the Sedgemoor Radio Controlled Flying Club (SRCFC) took to the skies with their models at Westonzoyland Airfield to set a world record.
The aim was to join other clubs affiliated with the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) around the country to see if they can set a world record for the most models in the air at any one time.
The challenge marks the centenary of the BMFA and the previous record of 178 reportedly was set in the US in the 90s.
SRCFC took part in the challenge with 16 flyers on Sunday, May 14.
The number of models in the air at Westonzoyland will be added to the ones of all the other clubs in the country affiliated with the BMFA.
One of its members, Christopher Betty, said: “It’s not just us at Westonzoyland. It is a national competition. There are 300 clubs around the country so it is a single, collective submission taking into account all the clubs.
“The BMFA is celebrating its centenary and thought it was a good idea to set a record in the centenary year.”
Mr Batty said “members who flew planes, helicopters and drones on Sunday are waiting with bated breath”.
He added: “Everyone who took part is quite excited at the opportunity to set a world record and we are waiting as numbers are counted nationally and ratified by Guinness World Records.”
The Sedgemoor Radio Controlled Flying Club is expecting the results by the end of the week.
