DESPITE the events of the last couple of years regularly disrupting the activities of Bridgwater Swimming Club, the club has gone from strength to strength from the end of 2021 and through 2022.
On the 14th May, the club competed in the Cotswold Series A final.
The club had to compete in four previous rounds to qualify for the final and having won all four rounds and topping the league section of the series the club went into the final as firm favourites to win.
Despite the clubs commanding lead in the league section the swimmers knew they could not relax with the scores reset for the final.
The swimmers started off well and took an early lead and at the first points score were leading the gala but by only a few points.
The club continued to lead at each point score but were never winning by more than 5 points, such was the nature of this tough competition.
At the penultimate points score City of Bristol had clawed back the level points with Backwell not far behind in third place. The Bridgwater swimmers kept pushing through the final run of events, racing hard.
When it was time to call the final scores, it was nail biting affair as the Bridgwater team were not sure if they had done enough to secure their first league title since 2009. The swimmers and coaches knew it was going to be a close call.
The final points came in:
- Cwmbran 145
- Brockworth 187
- Wells 209
- Academy Swim Team Burnham 223
- Bath Dolphins 247
- City of Bristol 274
- Backwell 281
- Bridgwater 291
The swimmers, coaches and supporters erupted as Bridgwater were announced as the Series Champions.
Bridgwater Swimming Club has been competing in the Series since 1984 and in that time has only won the Series on three previous occasions (1999, 2008, & 2009), making the swimmers only the 4th team in club history to bring home the title.
