FANS of the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival can learn more about its involvement in the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations at a special meeting next week.
The carnival has designed and built a cart that will be seen by millions of people during the Platinum Jubilee Pageant on Sunday, June 5.
The pageant will form part of this weekend's celebrations marking 70 years since the Queen's accession to the throne.
Hundreds of carnivalites from 17 carnival clubs have worked together on the 100-ft long cart designed to reflect regal elements of the monarchy.
The carnival's 'People's Pageant' cart contains 1,500 individual lights, has been decorated with more than 200 litres of water-based paint, and contains more than 40 engineered moving parts.
A group of VIPs were able to see the cart on Thursday, May 26, and the carnivalites involved held two full dress rehearsals on Sunday, May 29.
Carnival organisers are planning to display the cart in Bridgwater town centre on Sunday, June 12 to allow the public a close-up look at the carnivalites' achievement.
Spectators of the Bridgwater Carnival on Saturday, November 5 and the six other Somerset Guy Fawkes Carnivals will have the chance to see the cart in action.
Before that, people will be able to learn more about the cart at the next meeting of the Bridgwater & District Civic Society on Wednesday, June 8.
Guest speaker Chris Hocking, project leader of the Jubilee cart, will speak to the society and interested members of the public about the cart at the Victoria Centre.
Dave Chapple, chair of the civic society, said: “The guest speaker at the June meeting of Bridgwater and District Civic Society is Chris Hocking, a leading Carnival figure for generations and the inspiration behind the Platinum Jubilee Carnival cart.
“This will be the first public talk on the story behind the planning, construction, and London journey of the cart, and will be eagerly awaited by many civic society members and visitors who may wish to come to this special meeting.”
Mr Hocking's talk will begin at 7:30pm at the Victoria Centre (Victoria Park, Bridgwater) on Wednesday, June 8.
Civic society members will be able to watch the talk for free.
Entry will cost non-members £3.
