A MAN from Bridgwater has been fined £440 after avoiding payment of a £7.90 train fare.
Court documents say Brett Lee Lake, of Wyndham Road, travelled on a First Great Western service in Taunton “without having previously paid your fare of £7.90 and with intent to avoid payment thereof”.
Lake, 26, committed the offence on December 7, 2021.
He was proved guilty in his absence by a magistrate in North Somerset on Friday, June 17.
He was ordered to pay a £440 fine, £7.90 in compensation to the train company, £180 in court costs, and a £44 victim surcharge.
He has until Friday, July 8 to pay his £671.90 court bill.

A Burnham-on-Sea man has also been fined for travelling on the railway without paying a fare.
Hayden David Buttery, of Manor Road, was caught on a First Great Western service at Weston-super-Mare on November 28, 2021 without having paid a £7.70 fare.
Buttery, 25, was proved guilty in his absence at North Somerset Magistrates' Court on Friday.
He was fined £220 and must pay £7.70 in compensation, £180 in costs, and a £34 victim surcharge.
Buttery must pay his £441.70 balance by July 8.
