THE start of term at a Bridgwater secondary school has been delayed over safety concerns.
Parents and carers were told on Friday (September 2) that children should be kept home today (Monday) due to an "incident".
Headteacher Aaron Reid was alerted to "an issue with a window falling into a room in our new building" and immediately decided to close the school until further notice.
Mr Reid told the Bridgwater Mercury today (Monday): "Although no one was injured, it made us aware of a potential risk to our staff and students’ safety that needed to be taken seriously.
"We are working closely with the Department for Education on a plan to reopen the site as quickly and safely as possible.
"However our priority will always be the wellbeing of our students and staff."
A DfE team is visiting the school this afternoon (Monday) and will keep the school community informed of any developments.
Mr Reid added: "Delaying the start of term was the very last thing we wished to happen and I know the staff team are so keen to welcome our students back into school and meet our new Year 7 starters.
"Our focus is to get our children back into school this week and have a really positive and productive new academic year.”
