TELEVISION crews will be in Bridgwater this week to record scenes for an upcoming eight-part drama series set in the 1960s.

King Square and Sedgemoor District Council's office building will be used by production company CBS VIACOM, which is filming Black Cake in partnership with Hulu.

Hulu is an American streaming service with over 46 million subscribers. Its original series include The Handmaid's Tale, How I Met Your Father, and Castle Rock.

Black Cake is based on Charmaine Wilkerson's debut novel of the same name. 

The book was published in February and has been described as “the extraordinary story of how the inheritance of secrets, betrayal and memories can shape a family for generations”.

The series will feature several locations, including Jamaica, Rome, the UK, and California.

King Square and Chandos Street will be closed on Friday, September 23 between 7am and 9pm.

A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said: “King Square and the council’s HQ office building in Bridgwater is to become a film set for the next few days for production company CBS VIACOM in partnership with Hulu, who are producing the new eight-part drama series called Black Cake, based on a novel written by Charmaine Wilkerson and set in the 1960s.

“Filming will include the frontage of Bridgwater House and the closure of the King Square and surrounding pavements and roads of King Square and Chandos Street.

“The closure will be for the day of September 23, with preparation work taking place on Wednesday 21 and Thursday, September 22.

“All appropriate risk assessments and road closures have been obtained.

“The production company will be making charity donations to the Nelson Trust, Somerset Film and Video, Bridgwater Food Bank and the Art Centre.”
