A STUDENT from Brymore Academy has won a prestigious award from the Somerset Cricket Foundation for his volunteering work within the community.
The Somerset Cricket Foundation held their annual Grassroots Cricket Awards and
Year 10 Brymore student, Oscar Warren, who was nominated by his club for the work he does in encouraging younger children and helping them learn the game was in the Rising Star category.
From the shortlist he was announced as the winner on the evening and presented with his trophy by international world cup winner and former England player, Fran Wilson.
Oscar has been playing cricket since he was very young and started volunteering when his club introduced the ECB initiative All Stars a few years ago and he now regularly helps with the All Stars, Dynamos and the Under 13 age group team along with helping umpire and score for the women’s team when he can.
Oscar said: "I love playing cricket and just want to help others fall in love with the game. If we don’t encourage new people to try cricket then one day there may not be cricket so I see it as a way to keep the game alive but also to help other children see what a brilliant sport it is."
Mr Thomas, Head of Brymore added: "To give up your time to help others is a value we instil into our students at the school and so we are very proud that Oscar continues to take this significant aspect to the wider community."
The star-studded event was also attended by James Hildreth and Vic Marks and attendees to the event were given an overview of the aims of the foundation and the delivery of their programmes.
