A RETIRED nurse living in Puriton has became an author after having her first book published.
Lottie Dale wrote eight short stories over lockdown. They were inspired by her pet cat, Rory, who died around 20 years ago.
All of those stories are included in Rory – The Purl Cat, a 62-page book published by Austin Macauley on October 31.
The stories were written to entertain and provide comfort for others who have lost their pets by focusing on the idea of cats having nine lives.
The book begins when Rory, a much-loved cat, leaves his family whilst still in his prime.
He then discovers he can travel through time, take on different appearances and even become a ‘she’.
Lottie said: “Rory was my cat. He was a gorgeous Burmese pussycat who was unfortunately run over when I lived in Cornwall.
“Some of the tales are based on real stories. He goes to the Great Fire of London, and he goes on a warship during World War II.
“There’s a couple of others that need a bit more imagination, and one that’s totally bonkers!”
Lottie initially planned to make a picture book about a cat that helps care for an autistic child - inspired by her career - and the idea evolved over time.
“It’s taken 20 years from the concept,” said Lottie.
“During lockdown, I finally knuckled down and wrote the story. Then I saw that Austin Macauley were looking for submissions.
“I’m delighted it’s finally here. I love animals, and I’ve always loved cats.
“It’s brought my love of animals and writing together. Because it took so long, I started to feel like it was a figment of my imagination!
“It feels great to see and feel it, and my grandkids think I’m pretty cool.”
The book was illustrated by Lottie's partner, Paul Priestley, who has gained over 280,000 YouTube subscribers with his online drawing lessons.
Rory – The Purl Cat is available to buy online from Amazon and Waterstones.
