The Met Office tells motorists to avoid travelling in fog they can. If they must travel, they should “drive very slowly with dipped headlights”.
Full-beam lights can reflect off the fog, causing a “white wall” effect.
Drivers are also urged to watch their speed as “fog can give the illusion of moving in slow motion” and use fog lights (but switch them off when visibility improves).
They have also been warned of “freezing fog”, which is made of water droplets that can form a layer of ice on roads or pavements.
