IT has emerged that Virgin Media Ltd has been hit with a court bill north of £62,000 for flouting safety rules in Bridgwater.

The company was ordered to pay £27,370.56 for breaches of the law in Weacombe Road on two days in March this year

It was also revealed at Taunton Magistrates' Court that Virgin committed three further safety breaches while working in Gordon Terrace on August 24 and 25 this year.

The company pleaded guilty to executing street works on the maintainable highway in contravention of a direction of safety given by the street authority, thereby failing to use its best endeavours to cooperate with the street authority in the interests of safety in breach of the New Roads and street Works Act 1991. For that offence it was fined £20,000 with £3,592.75 costs

Virgin also admitted executing street works while failing to secure that traffic signs were placed and maintained, and where necessary operated, as are reasonably required for the guidance or direction of persons using the street, having regard, in particular, to the needs of people with a disability, and while failing to comply with the provisions of the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice 2013. It was fined £12,000.

There was no separate penalty after Virgin pleaded guilty to failing to secure that the part of the street which was broken up or opened, or was obstructed by plant or materials used or deposited in connection with the works, was adequately guarded and lit having regard, in particular, to the needs of people with a disability.

The company's total court bill for the three offence came to £35,592.75

Virgin Media was earlier hit with a court bill of £27,370.56 for breaches in Weacombe Road in March, taking its total bill handed out at Taunton Magistrates' Court this month to £62,963.31.
