A BRAND-NEW interactive art exhibition inspired by stories told by commuters recently opened at Bridgwater railway station.

Locals braved the British summer weather to view and interact with illustrations all around the station.

The artwork, by Bristol-based artists Jade Perkin and David McMillan, tells stories about the station contributed by commuters, and events and incidents in their lives involving the site.

This unique exhibition uses augmented reality technology to overlay animation on top of the art.

Scanning a QR code on the image links the user to the interactive animation, bringing the images to life in a completely new way.

The Mayor of Bridgwater, Councillor Mick Lerry, formally opened the exhibition to the public, which will be on display until March 2024.

Speaking at the launch yesterday morning (Friday, July 14) Scott O’Hara the director of Seed, Sedgemoor’s creative people and places project who commissioned the project, said: “People are really excited to see how their stories have been brilliantly interpreted by Jayde and David and then brought to life by the animations created by Zubr Curio.

“It is a truly amazing combination of local people and professional artists working together to create something truly innovative, inspiring, and fun.”

Artist Jade Perkin also added: “We had such a great experience sitting down and with different members of the community to hear their stories, which provided the inspiration for the illustrations.”

The artworks will be on display at Bridgwater station until March next year, along with two further pieces that will be displayed at the Engine Room on High Street.

A walking route between the two parts of the exhibition will take people down Celebration Mile and along High Street.

A smartphone or tablet is required to experience the augmented reality elements but the illustrated stories can be enjoyed without one.
