A VACANT building in Bridgwater town centre could be turned into a retail space and two apartments under new plans.

An application has been made to Somerset Council to see if prior approval would be required for the scheme at 7 Clare Street, near The Avenue and Nutmeg House.

The application says the upper levels would be converted into two residential apartments if the plans are given the go-ahead.

Two rooflights would be added to the second floor to provide more natural light.

The application says: “The property is located within the centre of town and located around 150 metres from the nearest bus stop and also walking distance to the local train station.

“The floor between the commercial and proposed residential dwellings will be sound protected with new insulation installed to comply with current building regulations between floor joists.”

In the last week, separate plans have been submitted to the council that could see an unused area above The Palace Nightclub transformed into a flat.

If the plans are approved, the flat would be occupied by the club's manager.
