MORE than 200 over 60s showed they can still move like Jagger at Age UK Somerset's free Early Night Club at The Palace, Bridgwater.

Attendees made new friends or caught up with ones they hadn’t seen in a while, kept the bar busy and packed the dance floor.

Music from the 50s to the 80s was played by club DJ Dan, whose gran was in the crowd.

The event was staged by Age UK Somerset, supported by The Palace and funding from Bridgwater Town Council.

The charity's Kate Barrington said: “For 75 years Age UK Somerset has been working to make later life a more enjoyable experience in Somerset.

"We know there isn’t a one size fits all when it comes to getting older and we wanted to put on an event as part of our anniversary celebrations that would bring people together and was a bit different from those usually offered to 'older people'.

"So we came up with the Early Night Club idea because if people enjoyed a proper night out with music you could dance to, in a proper club with a friendly atmosphere before they were 60, why not when they are over 60?

"It was lovely to see so many smiling faces, a busy dance floor and people having a really good time together.

"It was great to meet so many people, to hear their heart warming stories and see that people who came by themselves weren’t alone for long.”

Rachael Lilley, local councillor and co-owner of The Palace with her husband Clive, said: “When Age UK Somerset first approached us with this idea we wanted to support the charity but we weren’t sure how popular the night would be.

"But it was an amazing event. Seeing how much fun the 200 or so guests had on the night, and all the wonderful comments we’ve had since, we are definitely considering making it a more regular thing in the New Year."

Among comments received by the charity, one person said: "I want to thank Age UK Somerset for the best evening’s fun I’ve had for so very many years.

"Myself and three friends - the oldest being me, 87 - put on our glad rags and headed to The Palace.

"I had to be pushed as I’ve been coping with a degree of anxiety since lockdown and widowhood but I can’t tell you how glad I was that I went.

"I thought I’d be sitting on the sidelines and watching, but as soon as my music, the Beatles, started nothing could keep me in my seat.”
