RUNNERS and walkers will take to the streets of Bridgwater on Saturday to raise awareness of road safety in memory of Bethany Branson, who tragically died in a three-vehicle collision last November.

The memorial run has been organised by Claire Sully, the Liberal Democrats' parliamentary candidate for the new Bridgwater constituency.

As part of her campaign, she will take on a series of runs across the constituency to engage with locals about the issues that face them.

Her first run will be held in memory of “beloved Bridgwater resident” Bethany, 19, who died when she was a passenger in a car that was involved in a crash with a Ford Transit van.

The van's driver, Luke Hawkes, drove at high speed through a red light on the A38 Taunton Road before colliding with two cars that had right-of-way at a junction.

In January, Hawkes was sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting causing death by dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen.

Bethany's parents, Amy and Ben Branson, have launched a petition to try and prevent another tragedy caused by drink-driving.

Earlier this month, they also organised a fundraising rugby match in her honour at Bridgwater & Albion, where she was a popular player.

And they will take part in the 5km run, which will start next to Haygrove School at 10.30am on December 2.

Ms Sully, who represents the Mendip South division on Somerset Council, said: “When I read about Bethany’s tragic incident and learned what her family were looking to do in her name, I wanted to get involved and see how I could help them.

“For many people, road safety is a real priority.

“If we think about Bethany, and the circumstances surrounding her death, it may prevent people getting in their cars after drinking alcohol, which is especially important at this time of year as we head into the festive period.

“I’m excited to take on this challenge and meet many residents of our wonderful constituency, while the runs will also aim to highlight important issues which are a priority to local people.

“I very much welcome all of those interested to join me and to share with me their priorities.

“There will be plenty of walking as well, so you do not have to be an experienced runner to get involved.”

Locals are invited to join Ms Sully and Bethany's family to run or walk as much of the route as they would like to.

Details about further events will be released on Ms Sully's Facebook page, Claire Sully Parliamentary Candidate, and clairesully.com.
