BRIDGWATER'S cinema has been named among the best in the country at the industry's biggest night of celebrations.

In October, the town's Scott Cinemas multiplex was nominated in the ‘Cinema of the Year (25 screens and over)’ category at the Big Screen Awards.

There was a second category for cinemas owned by operators with 24 screens or fewer.

The Bridgwater multiplex was named the runner-up, behind Greenwich Picturehouse, at the awards ceremony at The Brewery in London on November 23.

Although the Northgate Yard venue – led by manager Zac Tucker – did not bring the top prize home, there was still plenty for its team to be proud of.

A Scott Cinemas spokesperson said: “The team at Scott Cinemas are very proud to have been nominated for 'Cinema of the Year (25 screens and over)' at the Big Screen Awards.

“We all worked very hard over a number of years to bring this premium flagship cinema to Bridgwater along with Somerset Council.

“Now with seven screens and offering the latest in cinema technology including Dolby Atmos in selected screens – the only cinema in the South West to do so – we can show a much broader range of films and offer a premium experience in our cinema that was always much more difficult in an older premises.

“Whilst we came in second place on the night, we feel honoured to have been shortlisted along with some incredible cinemas around the country, and a massive well done to Zac and his team for their efforts, and to our audience for the continued support.”

Scott Cinemas relocated from Penel Orlieu to Northgate Yard last October, where it was joined by Allstar Sports Bowl and Nando's this year.

Signage for another eatery, La Kasia Tapas and Cocktail, has been put up at the unit between the bowling alley and popular PERi-PERi chicken restaurant.

The £16 million Northgate Yard complex was led and funded by the former Sedgemoor District Council.
