A MAN from Bridgwater has been given a British Empire Medal for his services to a local village, after making the New Year Honours list 2024.

Harry Charles Lawrence Meade has been recognised for services to the community in Goathurst, Somerset.

He is a trustee for the Goathurst Relief in Need charity.

According to TotalGiving, Goathurst Relief in Need makes grants to individuals in order to relieve and prevent poverty.

It mainly helps elderly and young people in Goathurst who are in conditions of need, hardship, or distress.

British Empire Medals are given only to those with 'achievement or contribution of a very “hands-on” service to the community in a local geographical area', according to The Honours System.

"This might take the form of sustained commitment in support of very local charitable and/or voluntary activity; or innovative work that has delivered real impact but that is relatively short (three to four years) in duration."

The presentations of British Empire Medals are traditionally made locally.
