The Cannington Yarn Bombers are contributing to a D Day 80th Anniversary commemorative work.

Titled The Longest Yarn, the contribution includes two panels depicting events from 1944.

The ambitious project consists of eighty 1m x 0.5m panels made up entirely of knitting or crochet that shows the preparations and events of D Day, June 6, 1944.

The completed work will be displayed at Carentan Cathedral in Normandy from May 28 to August 31, after which it will tour the UK and the US.

Bridgwater Mercury:

The Cannington Yarn Bombers depicted the US 535th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion's stay at Brymore House (now Brymore Academy) and their departure through the village.

The group were helped by John Edney, who as a child remembered visiting the camp and has an archive of material about the unit.

Before being transported to Normandy over Easter, the panels were showcased at the Cannington United Reformed Church, the group's regular meeting spot.
