A food and art venue's new retail space in Bridgwater has been busy in the weeks following its official opening.

The SL-ATE Concept Store, which combines the arts with food, opened its doors to the public on June 15.

Since then, it has already hosted its inaugural event, a workshop offering attendees a masterclass in perfume creation.

Speaking of the initial weeks, owner Nathan Slate said: "The first weeks of being open have been a whirlwind!

"It’s been wonderful to see people coming in to see what SL-ATE is all about and I’ve enjoyed being able to talk to local people about some of the artists whose work is on display as well as showing off my own creations."

Mr Slate believes that the appeal of SL-ATE extends beyond the attractive amalgamation of arts and food.

It is a place where patrons can immerse themselves in the 'slow living' revolution.

He mentioned that his vision for the venue was about creating a unique, unhurried experience.

Mr Slate said: "It's great to see how interested people are in what I'm doing, and how much they've gotten into the spirit of taking things slowly while they're here."

The retail space is not the only part of the store that's been keeping him occupied.

He also enjoys collaborations and plans on hosting more workshops.

Mr Slate continued: "I’m really excited to get involved with more artist collaborations, including working with jewellery designer Julia Thompson on a project for Somerset Arts Week.

"I love working with other artists, but I also really enjoy bringing new styles of art to people who want to have a fun experience and learn something new, which is why I'll be hosting more workshops in the future, teaching different art skills so people can give them a go."

From his beginnings as a local fashion designer in Essex and studies in fashion design at London universities, Mr Slate has dressed prominent celebrities like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Naomi Campbell.

He now splits his time between Somerset and Madeira Island.

He views his art as escapism and continues to create fashion collections while juggling interior design and creating ceramics and homewares.
