SOMERSET Council has confirmed it is following a 'normal legal process' with regards to travellers in Bridgwater.

Travellers have once again set up an 'unauthorised encampment' at Victoria Park, following an incident last month which left damaged bollards and litter strewn across the public space.

Several caravans have since returned to the park, as well as horses and dogs - discarded litter can also be seen in the area.

Somerset Council says it is currently being supported by Avon and Somerset Police to remove the encampment from the site.

A spokesperson said: "The council is aware of an unauthorised encampment on Victoria Park in Bridgwater and is following the normal legal process, supported by Avon and Somerset Police.

"If residents are concerned about anti-social behaviour they should report this by calling police on 101."

A police spokesperson added: "We are aware of an unauthorised encampment which arrived in Victoria Park, in Bridgwater, yesterday (Tuesday, July 2).

"A number of vehicles accessed the park at around 12:15pm.

"Officers have visited the site and engaged with individuals there as well as the local community.

"We are in close contact with the local authority and have been supporting them with the management of the site, as trespassing is a civil matter."

Bridgwater Town Council said the Open Spaces Operatives team was in action at Victoria Park to clean up when travellers last set up camp in June.

A spokesperson for the town council said: “Our Open Spaces Operatives have removed rubbish and cleaned Victoria Park following an unauthorised encampment.

“The damaged bollards are being repaired and we are carrying out further strengthening works to try to prevent this happening again.

“Thank you for your patience in being unable to use this open space while the appropriate processes were followed.”
