A VACANT betting shop in Bridgwater could be converted to a new 'adult gaming centre'.

Merkur Slots Ltd (UK) has applied for permission to change the use of 23 High Street - formerly home to Betfred - with plans to utilise both the basement and the ground floor.

The applicant, Mekur Slots, already runs the 'Cashino' at 8 Fore Street, although there is no mention of this branch closing or relocating in the planning application.

Only minor alterations to the front of the building are proposed, as well as advertising consent for two externally illuminated fascia signs, and one externally illuminated 'timber projecting sign'.

It is hoped that the adult gaming centre would operate 24-hours per day, and the applicant believes it would 'enhance the vitality and viability of the town centre'.

Regarding potential noise disruption caused by late opening hours, the applicant said: "Merkur Slots noise levels are generally very low and impacts on disturbance to surrounding uses are effectively mitigated and minimal.

"For example, as set out in the submitted brochure, only background music is played within venues (similar to shops) and there are no tannoy systems."
