A MAN was found dead in Bridgwater town centre earlier this month, police have revealed.

The 49-year-old male was found deceased at an address on the High Street following concern for welfare reports on Tuesday, July 9.

His death was first treated as suspicious, but is now deemed 'unexplained' following a post-mortem.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We were called on Tuesday, July 9, following concerns for the welfare of a man.

“Officers subsequently attended an address in High Street, Bridgwater and a 49-year-old was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"His next of kin has been informed and our thoughts are with them.

"His death was initially treated as suspicious, but following the outcome of a post-mortem examination, it is now being treated as unexplained.

Bridgwater MP Ashley Fox sent his best wishes to the man's family.

"I am deeply concerned about this news. This tragic event is understandably distressing for our community, particularly for visitors and our town centre traders who are already grappling with issues of crime and antisocial behaviour," Mr Fox said.

"It is imperative that we address the many concerns around crime in our town head-on to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone in Bridgwater.

"I have called a meeting with police representatives later this month to gain a better understanding of the crime issues affecting our town and our traders, and to work towards a solution that will benefit both residents and businesses alike.

"It is crucial that we come together to create a safer and welcoming environment for all.

"My thoughts are with the deceased's family during this difficult time."
