HOLLYWOOD screenwriter Craig Luck is hosting a Somerset Film storytelling skills workshop for aspiring writers in Bridgwater.

Luck was responsible for writing the original script of ‘Finch’, which was released by Apple TV in 2021, starring Tom Hanks.

The screenwriter started writing the script while at university before re-writing it as a feature-length project, with Ivor Powell (Associate Producer on Blade Runner).

Now, however, Luck, in collaboration with Somerset Film, is using his skills to help to inspire and educate the next generation of young screenwriters.

Luck, who recently returned to live in the West Country, developed his own filmmaking skills as a young student at Somerset Film, and is now one of the trustees of the organisation.

This new Somerset Film writing skills workshop will take place at The Engine Room in Bridgwater on Tuesday, August 20 from 10am until 4pm, and will cost £70.

Find out more about the workshop and how to get involved on the Somerset Film website: www.somersetfilm.com/get-involved.

During the day, selected short films will be screened to understand the form of a short screenplay and to show what makes for a good short film and how the medium can be used effectively.

A scene from a feature film will also be used to explore the more technical side as participants each write the same scene - before it is revealed how the writer did it.

Looking to inspire the next generation of screenwriters, Luck said: “You’ve got a unique voice and if you believe in that voice, then you need to make that voice heard.”

Throughout the day there will be opportunities for the attendees to project their voice, compare ideas and learn from one another.

Somerset Film was founded in 1995 and it aims to encourage collaboration and the sharing of skills and to champion innovative work and foster creative engagement.
