BRIDGWATER’S Grade II listed library could have its roof replaced to stop water leaking into the building.
Somerset Council owns and manages the library on Binford Place, which was built in 1905 and had a two-storey extension built in the late 1970s.
But the building has been subject to “extensive water ingress” which has not been resolved despite several “temporary repairs”.
The council submitted its proposals to remove and replace the roof on August 14, with a decision expected by September 25 at the earliest.
The work would also see repairs made to the structural timber, stonework and masonry, and the lath and plaster ceilings.
Insulation would also be installed to create thermal improvements and make sure the library complies with building regulations.
In its application, the council said: “The overarching project objectives are to address external defects associated with age as well as previous inappropriate and unsympathetic temporary repairs (in the form of reactive maintenance) and incorrect detailing of the existing pitched roof.
“There is currently widespread, and in some instances, extensive water ingress which has damaged the historic internal fabric, led to offices needing to be shut and staff relocated as well as being unsightly for the general public/visitors.
“In consideration of the above, it is proposed that the life-expired existing roof covering is stripped back to the rafters, re-built and recovered using the existing tiles.”
It adds: “The roof recovering scheme is required to prevent further deterioration of the internal fabric and structure caused by water ingress from the failed life-expired roof coverings; compounded by an inadvisable roof build up.
“The proposed design and materials have been carefully considered and planned so as not to detract from the importance and character of the heritage asset.
“In view of the setting, where alternative products have been suggested, these have been incorporated in such a manner that will not be visible to all adjoining land and will not be detrimental to the local character.”
