A BRIDGWATER high-tech fabric manufacturer is expanding rapidly, hiring 35 more operatives to meet its "overflowing global order book".

Nonwovenn employs 220 people at its Bath Road headquarters and took on 19 more last year. It is now recruiting 35 more operators to meet customer demand.

The “local multinational” business has customers in 30 countries and exports 70% of its output.

Its "magic bandages" are claimed to be "saving the lives of Ukrainian soldiers due to their ability to stop bleeding in 60 seconds".

The firm also makes suits that help firefighters and other security personnel deal with chemical, biological and radioactive risks. These include suits designed to prevent the dermal absorption of toxins which proved fatal to firefighters at the Grenfell disaster in London.

Demand for the specialist suits is growing fast as is the provision of fabric for a hugely popular alternative to smoking called nicotine pouches. They are sold in the big supermarkets and Nonwovenn now supplies one-third of the fabric used in them globally.

David Lamb who rescued the business from insolvency 20 years ago and now calls it his “local multinational”, said: “Our Somerset success story is only going to get better as we bring in more continuous learning for our staff.

"We provide stable work that pays well and has lots of variety. As we grow, I am keen to continue our culture of professionalism and informality in what is still a founder-run business. I may be the chairman but everyone calls me David.”
