Ashley Fox, the MP for Bridgwater, has called attention to the seriousness of migraines and the need for better care.

It comes during Migraine Awareness Week, which takes place between September 23 and 29.

Research by The Migraine Trust found that many people with migraines are not believed or taken seriously, including in employment and healthcare.

More than half of respondents said their mental health has been significantly affected by migraines, with a third having had suicidal thoughts.

Mr Fox said: "We are seeing a stark picture of the reality for many who live with migraine.

"It is far more than just a headache.

"Not being taken seriously is having a significant impact on the lives of those with the condition."

The research also revealed that 90 per cent of people with migraines believe most people think it is just a bad headache.

Around 10 million people in the UK suffer from this condition.

The Migraine Trust's survey of 2,028 people with migraines found that 89 per cent said their mental health has been affected, with 55 per cent saying the impact is significant.

Mr Fox added: "It is essential that we change the perception of migraine and increase understanding about the true impact of living with the condition."
