ASHLEY Fox, Member of Parliament for Bridgwater, is proud to back Ups and Downs Southwest during Down Syndrome Awareness Month this October.
The charity, which is based at Westonzoyland, has provided crucial support to children and young people with Down’s syndrome, their families, and professionals for over 20 years.
Mr Fox recently visited the charity and met with Joanna, the Director, to learn more about the work they do. At any one time, Ups and Downs Southwest supports between 50 and 60 families, offering assistance with health, education, and advocacy.
As part of Down’s Syndrome Awareness Month, the charity is launching the October Experience Exchange, a unique initiative connecting young people with Down’s syndrome - known as Inspiration Explorers - with community members eager to share their skills and passions as Inspiration Guides.
The new initiative encourages young people with Down’s syndrome to explore new interests, discovering new hobbies and skills. Community members can become Inspiration Guides, helping to foster inclusion while sharing their own skills and interests. In addition, the initiative aims to create a supportive community that celebrates the abilities of individuals with Down’s syndrome.
Ashley Fox said, “I believe everyone deserves the chance to achieve their potential, and nothing should hold them back. Ups and Downs Southwest is doing incredible work, and I encourage everyone in our community to get involved in this wonderful initiative.”
Joanna Thorn, Director of Ups and Downs Southwest, added, “We are incredibly grateful for Ashley Fox’s support and his interest in the work we do at Ups and Downs Southwest. His visit highlighted the importance of community engagement and inclusion, which is at the heart of our mission.”
She added: “The October Experience Exchange is an exciting opportunity to bring people together, creating meaningful connections and celebrating the talents and abilities of individuals with Down syndrome. We truly appreciate everyone who helps us make a positive impact.”
