FORMER pupils of Dr. Morgan’s Grammar School for Boys in Bridgwater hosted a reunion last month after 50 years.

Nine former pupils – known as Old Morganians – met in September at the Morganians Rugby Football Clubhouse to reconnect and share memories about their time at the School. The idea for the reunion came about following an earlier Reunion Dinner, which took place in 2023 to celebrate the former School’s 300th Anniversary and was organised by the Dr. Morgan’s Association.

One of those attending the latest reunion was former pupil Roger Herd, who commented: “It’s great to be home, to actually carry on conversations that we actually started over 50 years ago. We spent the afternoon in the Clubhouse; local rugby legend Ian Vickery, who used to play for Bridgwater and Albion RFC, also attended. I had several lovely long conversations with everyone, discussing all the good bit, and the sad bits. Various people were too ill to make it, but it was just great event to attend.”

He added: “It looks like we’re going to continue the reunions on an ad hoc basis. On September 30, we had a Zoom meeting on Facebook Messenger. Quite a few of us talked about it and what we’d like to achieve with these reunions.”

Dr. John Morgan was a Somerset-born physician with a practice in Bridgwater, who founded the former School in 1723 at the instruction of his will, which included instructions for the creation of a new school, providing adequate finance to achieve that. Dr. Morgan served as Mayor of Bridgwater in 1720. Today, the site of the former Dr. Morgan’s School is occupied by the Haygrove School, which was established in 1973.
