AS part of this year’s Sound of the Streets Day in Bridgwater on Saturday, October 12, everyone is invited to come together as part of The Big Sing.

The Big Sing, which begins at 13.20pm, is a chance for everyone to congregate in Bridgwater High Street and sing songs, along with a live band. Well-known songs, such as Bill Withers’ Lovely Day and Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds will be recited. The day is completely free and will start at 10am with a solo saxophonist, followed by the Bristol samba band Ilu Axe and funky street brass, drumming groups and youth bands.

The session will be led by veteran street musician and long-time Somerset resident, Tim Hill. Alongside street music events, Tim founded his own 8 piece band twenty years ago – Tongues of Fire – which features musicians drawn from the worlds of free jazz, brass bands, contemporary classical, theatre and samba.

Commenting on the upcoming Big Sing event, Tim said: This is a great chance for us to come together and sing some great songs we all know and love, along with a wonderful band.”

The Sound of the Streets is an education charity based in Somerset that runs free outdoor participatory events and festivals, along with education projects for children and young people. The Big Sing is one of the charity’s most successful events, already having happened in Highbridge and Burnham, and in Taunton.

The charity is also running a drumming project in Bridgwater. Beats on the Streets is a dynamic new project bringing together young drummers in the Taunton and Bridgwater areas. Led by the talented young drummer Sean O’Hara, alongside professional drummers Emma Holbrook and Jo Meikle, this project is all about creating vibrant, energetic drumming groups that anyone under the age of 18 can join. Sessions are held at Eastover Youth Centre and Victoria Park Community Centre.
