FIREFIGHTERS were called to an Aga fire in North Newton, near Bridgwater, in the early hours of Sunday morning (October 6).

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service responded to the incident at 4.42am. It was attended by two fire engines from Bridgwater, one from Taunton, and a supporting officer.

A spokesperson for the service said: "The fire service were called to a report of an Aga on fire within a domestic property in North Newton, near Bridgwater.

"This was a two-storey, privately owned bungalow measuring 10 metres by 20 metres of brick construction.

"Fire confined to the Aga within the kitchen. Crews extinguished using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and small tools.

"A positive pressure fan was also used to clear smoke within the property.

"The Aga was 30 per cent damaged by fire."

The fire service has shared advice for residents in the event of a fire in their home.

They should raise the alarm and get everyone out of the home.

Once outside, they should stay out and call 999 for the fire service.

If escape routes are blocked and they are on the ground floor, they should go out of a window, throwing bedding or cushions to break their fall.

While if you can't get out at all, get everyone into one room, ideally with a window, and put cushions, towels or bedding at the bottom of the door to block smoke, open the window and call for help.
