A FIVE-STOREY extension to the west elevation of Bridgwater’s Mercure Hotel has been granted by Somerset Council.

DC Hotels Bridgwater Ltd had previously submitted proposals for the extension in March 2024, but considerable changes to the size and design by the applicant meant a further delay until October.

The extension will now comprise of 15 additional short stay accommodation units and ground floor commercial space. The extension at the ground floor will be marginally wider and deeper than originally intended, and the westward extension from floors one to five will be slightly wider.

Bridgwater’s Mercure Hotel occupies a central location on the town’s Celebration Mile, at the location between Eastover and the A38 Broadway. The four-star hotel was opened in 2018 by the-then Member of Parliament, Ian Liddell-Grainger.

It continues to provide most of the town’s hotel accommodation, with 119 guest rooms, along with café and restaurant facilities.

The hotel forms a wider complex with the adjacent redundant former Aldi supermarket, for which DC Hotels Bridgwater Ltd was granted planning consent in May of last year to use it as a multi-functional events and conference centre.
