BRIDGWATER’S debut ‘Fallen Moon’ art installation has experienced a partial eclipse after it deflated in the town’s Docks.
The astronomic incident occurred this afternoon (Wednesday, 16 October) and saw the 10-metre replica Moon at least half submerged in the water.
Not everyone was over the moon. Bridgwater Town Council issued a statement, saying: “We want to extend our thanks to everyone who promptly informed us about the deflation of Luke Jerram’s “Fallen Moon”. Your quick action allowed us to address the issue swiftly.”
“While this incredible artwork presents a unique opportunity for Bridgwater, being its first showing, it also comes with its own set of challenges, but let’s focus on the positives and the fantastic opportunities the Fallen Moon is bringing to Bridgwater’s Events and Cultural programme.”
Bridgwater resident, Lee Beckford, said: “At the time, I thought it was funny. It made me think of the Jaffa Cake advert. With everything else going on in Bridgwater at the moment with the roadworks causing mayhem. But then I found out the story that kids had been throwing objects at it as well, it’s a shame that the minority spoil it for the majority.”
He continued: “It’s a great thing for Bridgwater to have at the docks to promote Bridgwater as a town, especially at this time of year with the fireworks and carnival coming up.”
“I am just glad that it’s been repaired and back to its full moon status.”
