A DRIVER is due in hospital after a vehicle crash which forced a road closure for several hours.

Occurring near Bridgwater, the crash, which happened today (October 22), was "heavily affecting" the flow of traffic on the A39 both ways on the New Road Eastbound from Bridgwater turn-off to Limestone Hill.

Heavy delays were in place near Cannington, which also restricted the flow of traffic trying to get in and out of the Somerset village.

At the scene of the incident this morning, a spokesperson from the Avon and Somerset Police said: "The A39 near Cannington is currently closed following a single-vehicle collision.

"Emergency services were called to Main Road after the incident, near the junction with Limestone Hill, at approximately 9:55am today (Tuesday 22 October).

"The driver was checked over by a doctor at the scene and was due to be taken to hospital by officers.

"The road is closed between the Cannington roundabout and the junction with Skimmerton Lane, to allow repairs to a damaged electricity pole to be carried out."
