ADVANCE survey works ahead of the Dunball Roundabout upgrade next month are already causing mile-long tailbacks for motorists in Bridgwater.

Congestion on the A38 Bristol Road has been especially heavy this week, with lane closures and temporary traffic signals in place. The roadworks are happening concurrently as those on the A39 Bath Road, Bower Lane, and Eastover, in a move some motorists are unhappy with.

Somerset Council said: “We will be undertaking some advance survey work of the existing drainage system at Junction 23, starting October 28, 2024, for a duration of five days. This will involve some day-time lane closures as the survey work progresses around the junction.”

A spokesperson added: “Please note that the main scheme is scheduled to begin on November 11, 2024, but this advance survey work is essential to ensure everything is in order.”

Cllr Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste Services, said: “We know this is an incredibly busy time for Bridgwater – lots of inward investment, but of course with that comes some temporary disruption.”

The Dunball Roundabout upgrade will officially begin on November 11, 2024 and will cost £10.7 million. The scheme is intended to make it easier to walk and cycle at the roundabout, as well as improve traffic flow and capacity.
