THE parents of a teenager killed by a drink driver in Bridgwater two years ago have shared their experience of ‘monumental loss’ with MP, Ashley Fox.
Amy and Ben Branson’s daughter, Bethany Branson, was 19 years old when her life was cut short on the evening of November 8, 2022.
The pair met with Sir Ashley Fox MP on Saturday, November 16 ahead of Road Safety Week, which takes place from Monday, November 18 to 23.
This year’s theme focusses on the devastating toll of road crashes. Beth’s parents, who are determined to ensure their daughter is “not just a statistic”, discussed potential avenues of legislative and legal reform with Ashely Fox MP.
Bridgwater’s MP, who is a qualified solicitor and has a 20-year-old daughter, commented that he “was affected” when he read about Beth’s story in the news.
Speaking to Mr Fox, Amy Branson said: “This was not a genuine accident. But it was still considered a driving offence, despite the fact the driver chose to drink drive and chose to go through those red lights.”
Mr Fox confirmed to Amy and Ben that his parliamentary office would investigate the sentencing guidelines, with reference to aggravated and mitigating factors.
Another area of potential reform Beth’s parents would like to see relates to newly qualified drivers.
Amy said: “I think 17-year-olds should go on a course to look at the importance of road safety, similar to something like a driving awareness course.”
In response, Mr Fox suggested that the hazard perception test could be “made longer to include a further video about road safety.” He added: “There are serious consequences of doing 35 mph in a 30 mph on stopping distances. All points raised by Amy and Ben are worth looking at.”
Bridgwater’s MP also confirmed to Beth’s parents that, should the opportunity arise, he would like to raise her story in Parliament.
