BRIDGWATER’S annual lights switch on, fireworks and squibbing has been cancelled, which was due to be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
The Town Council took the decision to cancel the events owing to forecasted high winds and rain from Storm Bert.
However, the market, which is also part of the event, is still planned to go ahead and will be relocated from The High Street and Cornhill to Angel Place Shopping Centre and Bridgwater Town Hall, where there will still be over 40 stalls.
In a statement, Bridgwater Town Council said: “Due to the forecasted high winds and rain tomorrow, we need to make some adjustments to the Snowflakes and Shopping event.”
“Live entertainment will be reduced, with some performances taking place in Angel Place.”
“Unfortunately, the lights switch on, fireworks and squibbing have been cancelled due to safety concerns.”
The Town Council said it takes public safety “very seriously” and has to adhere to event insurance and risk management obligations. “These decisions are never taken lightly, but we must always put people’s safety first”, a spokesperson added.
Bridgwater’s Christmas Lights will now be illuminated from the evening of Monday, November 25, 2024.
The Bridgwater History Day at the Bridgwater Arts centre and the Bridgwater Blake Museum Christmas Fair will still go ahead as planned on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
