BRIDGWATER Town Hall will host the installation of an Earth replica artwork by artist Luke Jerram in 2025, following the exhibition of his short-lived ‘Fallen Moon’ project.

Jerram will exhibit ‘Gaia’ at Bridgwater Town Hall from November 3 2025, for three weeks. The artwork is a seven-meter diameter replica of Earth, created using detailed NASA imagery of the planet’s surface.

The ‘Fallen Moon’ exhibition was in Bridgwater Docks for just one week before falling victim to Storm Ashley, which caused irreparable damage to the fabric and electronic infrastructure. It was intended to run from October 14 to November 3 2024 and had a budget of £45,000.

Speaking about the ‘Gaia’ installation in Bridgwater, Jerram commented: “I am delighted that my partnership with Bridgwater will be continuing forward into 2025.”

“I hope that Gaia in the newly refurbished town hall will be an exciting cultural event for the town and that visitors will get to see the Earth as if from space, an incredibly beautiful and precious place.”

This installation is part of Bridgwater Town Council’s ongoing commitment to bring engaging cultural experiences to the town and will also mark the launch of the newly refurbished Town Hall Theatre where visitors will get to see the improvements alongside the artwork.

Cllr Irena Hubble said: “I am delighted to hear we are continuing to collaborate with Luke Jerram. The 'Fallen Moon' project exceeded expectations for the docks area. Families flocked to the event discovering the area as well as the project.”

“The work with local schools also reaped dividends, so now to have 'Gaia,' another one of Luke's works in the town hall, will be an added bonus for the town," she added. "We look forward to welcoming both residents and visitors to experience this extraordinary artwork.”

The artwork aims to evoke the “Overview Effect,” a phenomenon experienced by astronauts who view Earth from space, often resulting in a profound sense of awe and a deeper understanding of the planet’s fragility and interconnectedness.
